11 LEADERSHIP & TEAM BUILDING

I consider my newspaper staff my family. I find comfort in their accepting nature and love for the publication into which we pour our heart and souls. They match the energy, creativity, and drive to keep pushing for better and stronger issues. This staff holds half of my heart for safekeeping and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I feel blessed to lead them every day. I don’t consider myself to have some immense power over them, they are my companions, and I am a person they can find support, advice, or literally anything they so desire, in. This staff keeps me sane, and keeps me driven to tell the best stories.

It’s only the most highly anticipated event of our year, Newsgiving. I’ve had the pleasure of attending this event, held graciously at our adviser’s own home, for two years. It’s a potluck where we get together, share what we love about each other, eat lots of food, play games, and bond over pretty much everything, especially our adviser’s dog. The energy carried to our publication after is one of immense love and care for one another. This staff knows how important and vital we all are in creating this publication.

For the first time in the history of my tenure on staff, we threw my adviser, Mrs. Clark, a birthday party. As part of that, we as a staff secretly recorded videos wishing her a happy birthday and letting her know how much she means to us. We started the day by getting there early enough to bring balloons, place presents, and decorate, all of us adorned with a birthday hat. We sat her down, and played the video - which ended up with her crying hysterically and needing lots of hugs. Per birthday, Mrs. Clark usually played us all a video of Beyonce singing the famous happy birthday song, so we figured it was time to pay it forward. It was the happiest I’ve ever seen her, and she didn’t know how to express how grateful she was. The video ended with us all wishing a happy birthday to our “Clari-mom” because at the Clarion, we’re all Clari-family.

Every day I get to get up in front of the class and lead our announcements. If it’s Monday, we start with Happy or Crappy, where everyone shares one good or bad thing that happened to them over the weekend, and we send them good vibes. Otherwise, I get to tell them the day’s agenda, answer questions, and send them to work.

Who knew that scholastic journalism still thrives while school’s not in session? This year we invited both the Yearbook staff and Newspaper staff to attend a summer journalism bootcamp. We got to know each other, got a jump-start on our lessons for new staffers, and ended the 3-day camp with the publications staff having a water balloon fight photographed by our own teams. It was a great time to build relationships and journalism skills with our school’s Yearbook staff and realize that as a publications team we have a lot in common. It was also my first time with my staff publicly knowing I was Co-Editor-In-Chief, and my first real chance to shine in my given leadership role, and I loved it.

more about us

At the end of every issue we have a tradition of sharing the strengths and proud moments we had with everyone on staff called Superstar Shoutouts. Every student is assigned to write a short little blurb about the positive growth they’ve seen in their fellow staff. In the days following distribution, we’re given the opportunity to share these and offer up our vulnerabilities and grow closer.

We have a semi-regulated GroupMe, a messaging app, where staffers are free to ask any burning questions or participate in our bi-monthly sending of dog pictures to keep our fires burning. Our adviser isn’t in it, so any questions that we can’t answer or any messages she wants us to relay are sent about. The groupchat is an open forum for our staffers to express any praise or concern they may have, and since it’s notifications on, they understand the implications if they spam it. Through this group chat we’ve grown stronger as a staff and gained trust in each other to seek help when we need it.
