“We have not seen any impact from the shutdown at LSE – on the school, staff or on students who participate in various school programs."
-- Principal Brent Toalson

In my piece on the government shutdown, I talked to teachers, students and those affected. It was hard to find sources with personal anecdotes within our school but there were a lot of people unaffected who wanted to weigh in on the matter. It was a timely and newsworthy piece, and there are many statistics laced throughout.

“It continues to be a shock to me that people can claim to have loving compassionate values and at the same time, do work to undermine people’s ability to live, to be respected and to have the same rights that anyone else should expect to have,”

-- Andira Losh, Protest coordinator

I also write many stories about protests I have went to as I often find fellow Southeast students there, or feel that the issues being protested are newsworthy in themselves. I attended a smaller protest against the Nebraska Family Alliance, and I thought it was quite special because all attendees were wearing ball gowns, as the Nebraska Family Alliance was holding a fundraising gala.

“I’m fed up with [gun violence] being so common that we just hear ‘16 died’ and it’s really like – When are you going to stop? It shouldn’t be a thing that happens as frequently as it does.”

-- Aisha Monismith (12)

We also had a protest right outside of our own school on the football practice field. I was able to grab my camera, photograph the students and speakers, and write a timely article that affected all students at our schools. I pulled in students attending and speaking and compiled it into one news article.

“Nobody should ever feel that way at a safe place such as a school,” said Foster. “There is nothing like the feeling of solidarity you get when you’re marching alongside so many people fighting for one cause. I was at the front of the march, and I could hear people chanting the same words that I was chanting entire blocks behind me.”

-- Brett Foster (12)

A lot of the times I write about protests because they are newsworthy, any effort and desire to create change within an institution should be talked about, especially ones like March for our Lives. The protest was organized by students at Southeast, and a lot of the speakers were either alumni or upperclassmen. Stories like these are also important to give an idea to people who couldn’t attend the event or didn’t know much about it.
